Straight to the point - Manga is what people call comics and visual novels that originated in Japan.
Going along with history is too much of a pain, and I'm pretty sure asking a search engine will generate you thousands if not millions of the definition of Manga.
They have been there for as long as history can remember, and as time passed Manga has become quite popular going as far as in the west, as it becomes a word that isn't in need of translation anymore.
While not a staple description, comics tend to be comedy and aimed for children and young people while visual novels are aimed for adults and have deep storylines. Mangas, in a sense, cover both, since it does have a wide range of different styles and genre aimed for various audience. However different the contents and stories are, we still call them as Manga.
